Social
media in Ghana recently spotted a 19-year-old University of Ghana student who
has developed a meta search engine which crows several web pages to retrieve
information and displays them for end users. Very brilliant and encouraging for
most younger generation who wish to step into the tech industry.
He was
showered with praises and encouragement until few critics and sabotages,
the African “Dun dus” begun to literally rain several negative tides on the
young developer – Gabriel Opare. Yes! Criticism is good when it is
targeted to make the entity better off or improve. Unlike numerous blogs
claiming they know best in the IT industry, yet, they have not even launch a
single work of theirs. They sit in their comfort zone claiming the “ Mudclo was
a fraud, Mudclo not a search engine, Mudclo has been hacked”
among others. Well, those individuals have their point or say but,
what they missed was the young chap is a University of Ghana Level 300 students
studying Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology. He has defied the usual order
of the “IT guru”. Perhaps he took an IT course which enriched his ideas and
begun something. Amidst several critics, one which caught the attention of the
media was an article written by a self-acclaimed IT expert who careless but
exposed himself to the mediocre attitude of some Ghanaians. “They will never
try anything new, yet talk and less action. The moment one decides to take an
initiative they even dream of, the turn into Naysayers and Critics”.
Gabriel
is just 19-years and in other to crucify him for his work, rather point out
some of the floors or critic it and provide a better approach to his
work. It’s quite unfortunate some brothers and sisters don’t know how to
critically or rationally critic a project least they talk and make fun of
the individual, typical of some Ghanaians. Always joking and mocking over
serious business or issues. However, Gabriel has begun a revolution. He has
started a dream. He has discovered his passion and ready to go for it. The
media soiree is great, which would inspire him to do better. Well,
the Hackers or Crackers who attempted to destroy his work, he will definitely
come back stronger. Many people fear or do not have the gut to compete with the
biggest names in the corporate world. They get limited by the system and
terrified to take an initiative and live this would without utilizing their
talent. “Just like the Biblical parable of the talent, the last one with the 1
talent”. One thing these critics should note is: ones upon a time those big
names in the industry, started small amidst the challenges. Gabriel has just
begun and will do great things.
What
Gabriel should do is review his programming, take up other courses to develop
him better, get a good team behind him, and better take advantage of the media
while developing his brand. He is just 19 years and has guts to step into the
real world and make an impact. He has! But, more needs to be done.
There are like-minded individuals with remarkable abilities but
they get stuck in their dreams due to their inability to take action, face the
critics and prove to the world that they are not just spectators but
entrepreneurs, they are not players but managers, they are not just the masons
but the engineers.
Gabriel
needs the support. If today he is unable to compete with the with notable names
such as Google, Safari, Mozilla, YouTube among others, he may receive support
by any of the tech companies to excel. Most of the apps or devices we use
daily were inspired by an individual’s idea. They may not necessarily
be programmers, but the thinkers who would require the programmers
to actualize their work into reality. You may
often find the architect who knows everything about a design of the
building or vehicle and how it functions, but surprisingly do not know how to
mix the cement and the sand to make an outstanding brick or house. You may even
notice the said architect in question knows the theory but practically, they
need the real individuals to fix that. They need a strong team to
push that. The likes of Bill Gate, Mark Zuckerberg, Larry Page and Sergey Brin
Ph.D., I refer to them as the “Google brothers” among others may have strong
programming background but now, their ideas or work have been transformed into
an empire which is run by a team.
They don’t necessarily have to code
again; they have employed a good number of people to take charge of the rest.
In terms of programming, security, branding among others. They couldn’t have
gotten to this level without the courage, perseverance and the “Team” who are
dedicated to push the dreams of the genius. All they did was to start
something, believed it and spent the rest of their life making it better.
Gabriel may have started something, all he needs is a dedicated team ready to
effectively actualise them, safeguard the brand, make it a household
name, and contribute to solving the everyday challenge of society.
If you
find it fraudulent perhaps that's how you are “programmed to think”.
He is not limited by the system. Gabriel Opare, the young Mudclo has
started something; he will definitely excel.
“They
smile and have fun with you, but deep down they are jealous of your success”
Mushugu 2013.
