A
true son of the land has taken Ghana to the next level in Skeleton and Bobsled
- Akwasi Frimpong. The only time I heard of Bobsled was in a Jamaican
- Movie Cool Runnings a 1993 American comedy sports film
which was directed by Jon Turteltaub. Now, our brother has
written his name in the history books in Ghana and Africa. He will represent
and defend the flag of Ghana at the Winter Olympics and look forward to bringing
home not only a medal but honor to the nation soon.
Do
you know what he has done? "Breathe new life in sports in Ghana!”. With
such initiative, I have personally seen some of the youth
ready to be part of this historic moment in the sports fraternity in
Ghana and Africa.
Nonetheless,
am looking forward to seeing a feminine touch in Skeleton and
Bobsled. So far, the curiosity of few interested Ghanaians have started some
arguments with the usual critics aligning his initiatives to people who abuse the fame and later use that medium to apply for
visas for people. We get that a lot from such enthusiastic youth these days.
Interestingly, this young man is far from what the critics perceived notions were. He
has passion for the sports particularly the Skeleton and Bobsled, trained hard
for it and have big dreams to create a platform for the youth to be part of
this new disciplines.
My
instinct kept hitting me literally from the day I shared his story on social
media, that Skeleton and Bobsled would be more fun for the kids as well. This
particular sport has been with us but we least noticed it. In fact, growing up
we did similar skate board but we sat on it instead of lying on it with our
belly as demonstrated by the skeleton sports athlete
- Akwasi Frimpong at the Decathlon Sports Shop.
Nothing
really comes easy in life especially when introducing something new to the
market or society. Rationally, it takes daring leadership skills, good
organising abilities and that motivational drive to ensure that
product and service gets its full attention or serves its intended purpose. In
the sports industry around the world, countries have strategically positioned
themselves to effectively channel the efforts of the youth to sports and other
leadership programs. While others have the systems in place to encourage the
youth to take-up such initiatives, others cower around and allow the youth to
exploit their talents "without help" or mentorship and when the succeed, the country later boastfully take credit they never deserved in
the first place. “Perhaps, whining around I guess!” Lets support our very own!!
“What
is preventing the youth from taking initiatives? Is it fear of failure?” We
have tonnes of information available on our internet and equally inspiring ones
we can learn from but all would be feasible with an enabling
environment.
Ghana
also deserves those initiative to encourage the youth and children to exploits
their talents that would eventually lead to socio-economic growth in the
country. Let us invest in sports and we may reduce drastically the
unemployment that have "engulfed" us in the country. It takes no
standard deviation, correlation or better still Calculus grasp how to use
sports to engage the youth. Akwasi Frimpong has started an
interesting Olympics sports. We wish him all the best and ready to support.
