The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu lauded
Commonwealth Hall for the massive reforms the Hall has initiated this academic
year.
Speaking at the maiden edition of the Commonwealth Hall Renaissance
program, the Sports edition on Saturday 22 September 2018, He commended the
Students for the peaceful procession of their freshmen to the matriculation
grounds and urged the students to respect the rules and regulations of the
University.
“Let me congratulate you today for the descent procession you embarked
today,… when you stay within the confines of the law, then you are happy
yourself” Prof. Oduro expressed.
The Vice Chancellor noted that, Commonwealth Hall today is not what He
perceived years ago. He added that, in those days as a student, they were
focused on excelling, students’ activism, others took initiatives and were
often seen debating on National issues which to a larger extent resulted in the
Hall having many Old Vandals at higher positions in the Country and across the
world.
He cautioned the students to avoid violent attacks among each other but
rather channel their energies productively by excelling in every area of life
including sports, among others and abhor fighting as well as destroying
properties of the University of Ghana.
“The Hall has over the years played key role in the University and
National and we need to rather focus the energies to rekindle such activism and
not fighting among student, which rather tarnishes the image of the
Hall” He said.
Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu mentioned that He was
informed about progress made by Commonwealth Hall and Mensah Sarbah Hall
sports events and called for deepening the friendly relationship.
“I was informed that Commonwealth Hall had a peaceful match
between Mensah Sarbah Hall. Even though Commonwealth Hall lost
the game, they peacefully left to their Hall…in Sports you either win, lose or
draw, ultimately you need to appreciate the essence of sports “he
added.
Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu who was a former Sportsman,
having played for Secondi Hasaacas, later joined the
administration of Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club Limited as a Director
expressed the need to combined Sports with education. He alluded some
prominent people who through sports rose to greatness.
Meanwhile the first edition of the Commonwealth Hall Renaissance dubbed
- “Creating a Link Between Sports and Academia “was sponsored Ernst and Young
and supported by Old Vandals Association (OVA).
