Vandals Tidbits: Wearing of gowns to Dining Hall in Commonwealth Hall - I.K. Gyasi shares

The younger generation of Students and even some alumni of the University of Ghana may only be aware of two occasions where gowns were worn. During matriculation and congregation. In the University of Ghana there are other moments besides confirmation of Doctorate or honorary follows where gown are worn.

The resurface of an old picture of students in gown in the dining Hall of Commonwealth Hall on social media literally spark some comments and majority sort clarity whether it was just after a matriculation party or there was a rational behind it wearing the gown.

I. K. Gyasi shares the rational for wearing of gowns at the University of Ghana.

THE GOWN

There were two main kinds of gown, the undergraduate gown and the graduate gown.

The undergraduate gowns of Akuafo, Legon and Volta were of one colour, blue. The undergraduate gown of Commonwealth Hall was red. The University graduate gown was black, with special designs or designed colours for depicting the different courses of study.

I understand that, at the beginning, students had to wear gowns for lectures. The practice was stopped. However, in the Halls of Residence, a student who had to see his Hall Tutor, Senior Tutor or Hall Master had to wear his gown, whether undergraduate or post-graduate.

At Graduation Ceremonies, Graduates had to wear a graduate gown, bought by himself or hired from his Hall of Residence. Undergraduate student attending the Ceremony had to wear the undergraduate gowns of their Hall of Residence.

The story of how students 'revolted' against the wearing of the undergraduate gown belongs to another day.
