THE COMMONWEALTH HALL COAT OF ARMS(4)
*The Motto*
The word "motto" is Italian meaning "word". A motto is a brief statement about the the purpose or belief of an organization, an institution, or an individual. Where there is a Shield, the motto is usually placed under it.
The motto of Commonwealth Hall is: *TRUTH STANDS* It is taken from a line in the poem, *The Hill of Truth,* written by the 16th Century English poet, scholar, soldier and Secretary of State, John Donne.(1572-1631). The poem itself is part of series named *Satyrs I, II and III.* Below is part of the poem from which the motto is taken:
*" On a huge hill,*
*Cragged and steep, Truth stands and hee that will*
*Reach her, about must, and about must goe.*
Choosing the motto was not an easy matter. In fact, it took the Hall Council four lengthy meetings before the Council settled on the motto.
*To be continued.*
